From the twisted region of space known as the Eye of Terror, the Chaos Space Marines launch their devastating Black Crusades against the Imperium. Once valiant and pure Space Marines like those that serve mankind, these foolish warriors rebelled and were forever damned after the wars of the Horus Heresy to eternal servitude to the vile gods of Chaos!
The Fell creatures of the Warp manifest in myriad forms, the most base of which are little more than a mass of talons and maws, creatures that seek only to rend and tear. The mighty Daemon Lords of Chaos however, are the will of their God made manifest; instilled with a dark intelligence and malign grasp of strategy. Such powerful entities can only be summoned through dread ritual and mass sacrifice, but when they do take physical form entire worlds have burned beneath their claws.
The lure of the Dark Gods of Chaos is subtle indeed, and many mortals have succumbed to their foul promises. Entire regiments of once-loyal Imperial Guard; mutant slaves desperate to wreak bloody vengeance on their former masters; underhive scum and Manufactorium workers – all these and more are counted among the mortal warriors of Chaos. These unnumbered legions of Traitors and Heretics form the bulk of any invasion force, often herded into battle to do little more than die in the teeth of the enemy guns.
Of all the war machines and weapons at the disposal of the Chaos gods, few are more powerful, more dreaded or indeed more hated than the Titans of the Traitor Legions. When the Horus Heresy divided the Imperium in bloody internecine warfare, over half the Titan Legions sided with the rebel Warmaster. Most who turned traitor, long glutted on the ruination of worlds and the countless slaughters during the Great Crusade, were easily swayed to the allegiance of the Chaos powers.
Many Traitor forces use internment in a Dreadnought’s sarcophagus as a punishment reserved for the most heinous of offences, while many older Chaos Dreadnoughts have been driven insane by their millennia of imprisonment. The Traitor Space Marines simply unleash the fury of their Dreadnoughts onto the battlefield, seeing the true touch of Chaos in their madness.
With billions of people under its control the Imperium is often beset by rebellions against its rule. Not all of these rebels are directly inspired by the Chaos Gods, but the Chaos Gods often find a way to corrupt the cause of the rebels to their own ends. Many such rebellions are led by powerful individuals, men who have been corrupted by that power and are seeking to break away from the Imperium’s constricting laws.
Many Chaos vehicles are corrupted and defiled Imperial patterns, often the very same vehicles assigned to the original Legiones Astartes during the Great Crusade. Some, however, are designs created in the Eye of Terror, and whose twisted blueprints owe nothing to any sane artisan – such heretical war machines are just as much an expression of the Warp made manifest as the mightiest Daemon Lord.
